PARISH
The whole of Thankey parish falls under the Kadakkarappally Panchayat, the Panchayat being the smallest civic unit which is controlled by a democratically elected Council.
The Panchayat is spread over an area of 8.9 square kilometers with National Highway 47 on its East and the Arabian Sea on its West. The Panchayat has a population of 19,586 in which there are 9,664 males and 9,922 females.
The parish of Thankey is one of the largest under the diocese of Kochi. There are 1650 Catholic families in the parish and the number of Catholics is around 5300.
Bulk of the people in the Panchayat depend on activities related to the coir industry and fishing for their livelihood earnings. Spinning coir yarn and making coir products like door mats, geotextiles etc are the major activities related to the coir industry while marine and inland fisheries, shrimp farming, aquaculture and daily-wage labour on farmsteads, timber mills etc constitute the other activities.
Main offering
The gravel given during the holy week and first Fridays are the main offering (follow the old tradition the gravel given in clay pot even today. during the holy week thousands of kilo of rice is cooked to make gravel) many people come, prepare and distribute the gravel as the witness of the medicinal properties of the gravel.
